Less Time and Less Money = Enhanced Customer Service
With the shipment of our 2007 portfolio of wines this October, Blackbird Vineyards is pleased to introduce reduced transit times and revised shipping rates ($1.50 per bottle) for our private client customers. We are able to offer this customer service as a result of a strategic relationship that we have developed with a business partner. Let’s face it, in comparison to many other items that we enjoy on a daily or weekly basis, wine is a heavy product (liquid and glass) to ship across the United state or the world, so any effort that we can make to lessen this cost to our customer (and the environment) benefits all parties.

We achieve these reduced “time in transit” and costs by having our private client shipments originate in two warehouse locations—one near the Napa Valley in Northern CA and one from a temperature controlled warehouse in St. Louis, Missouri. These two locations allow our fulfillment partner to automatically determine the most efficient and cost effective warehouse from which to pull the wine for shipment.

Here are a few “real world” examples…
A Blackbird customer in Chicago, IL will receive their wine in one day (from when the order is released from warehouse) and at a rate of only $1.50 per bottle. So, an order that contains six bottles of Blackbird wine—let’s say 3 bottles of 2007 Illustration and 3 bottles of 2007 Arise—will cost $9.00 to ship via UPS. This equates to only 2% of the order (before tax if applicable). For Bronxville, NY, that same bottle order will equate to two to three days in transit at the same cost—only $9.00. Miami, FL? Three days and $9.00. Back in CA, the same rates apply—six bottles to San Diego for $9.00 and one to two days shipping. So our customer in IL, NY and FL now pays 79% less for shipping six bottles and our friends in San Diego—70% less.

This is obviously great news for our clients, but also for the environment. Since almost all of our orders will be shipped via “Ground”, we will lessen the amount of time that our wine might spend in the cargo hold of an airline (which have much higher CO2 emissions than a truck travelling that same distance). Additionally, Blackbird is pleased to partner with our fulfillment partner Copper Peak Logistics, on a carbon offset program. This entails us paying a nominal fee (and Copper Peak matching this amount) for each shipment. Copper Peak takes these funds and buys carbon offsets to help lessen our carbon emissions.

Now we know that we are still shipping wine, and that its costs money and impacts the environment. We do believe our new program helps lessen both these impacts though.

We look forward to your comments.
